From Mess to Suitcase: The Cookbook That Doesn’t Exist

When you say, “Mom, you HAVE to put this in the cookbook,” you say it with such confidence — like there’s an actual, organized cookbook sitting somewhere in this house.

There isn’t. There never has been.

The “family cookbook” is a sweet, delicious lie.

It started with good intentions. I once imagined creating a tidy, heirloom-worthy book for you — something you’d pull off a shelf someday and say, “These are the meals we grew up with.” That idea inspired this blog and gave it its name. I figured if I couldn’t keep a physical cookbook organized, I could at least manage one online.

And yet… no cookbook. Just recipes scattered across our life — torn pages, faded notes, photos buried in my phone.

So when you ask me to add something “to the cookbook,” I smile.

This blog is my way of gathering what mattered — the meals you loved, the things you’ll call home to ask, the small pieces of us you might want to carry with you. Think of it as a suitcase I packed for you… no unpacking required.
